American Cola has unveiled its newly renovated basketball court in Ilupeju, Lagos, as part of efforts to support grassroots sports and provide better facilities for young talents in the community. The unveiling was held in partnership with the Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area.
As part of the launch event, the brand presented new jerseys to the council's male and female basketball teams. The revamped facility, now designated as the American Cola Creative Court, is also designed to accommodate other creative and cultural activities alongside basketball development.
Planet Bottling Company Marketing Manager Naji Awada stated during the unveiling that the project aimed to nurture talents and foster community bonds rather than just providing physical renovations. He noted that the company intends to replicate similar initiatives in other communities to support neglected talents.
Communications Manager Franklyn Eluagu added that the facility provides a space for young people to hone skills in basketball, graffiti, music, and dance. He stated that schools and communities interested in basketball now have a welcoming venue to showcase their talents.
Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area Chairman Oduwoye noted that the facility has already begun attracting residents from neighbouring local governments. He described the space as a standard outdoor sporting area equipped with fitness facilities, noting that it aligns with the council's goal of engaging youths and reducing street activities.
Oduwoye further disclosed that discussions are ongoing to extend the partnership to football and other recreational facilities, noting that about five inactive parks in the area have been identified for potential revitalization.
The unveiling coincided with the second edition of the American Cola Shoot the Hoop and Half Court tournaments, featuring 24 teams in each competition competing for a combined N5m prize pool. The Shoot the Hoop winner will receive N800,000, while the second and third-placed teams get N400,000 and N200,000 respectively. For the Half Court competition, winners go home with N2m, while runners-up and third-placed teams receive N1m and N500,000 respectively.
