The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has extended its ₦66-per-litre petrol discount promotion until October 31, 2026, providing additional relief to motorists amid rising fuel prices.

The extension follows the initial promotional offer introduced to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, which was originally scheduled to run from October 1 to October 7, 2026.

According to reports, the discount is available at participating NNPC Retail stations, with customers required to use the NNPC Fuel App to benefit from the promotional offer.

The company said the initiative was designed to ease the financial burden on consumers at a time of elevated global crude oil prices and volatility in international energy markets.

NNPC Ltd. also dismissed suggestions that the discount represents a return to the Federal Government’s petrol subsidy policy, insisting that the initiative should be understood as a temporary customer-relief measure.

The development comes amid renewed public concern over the cost of petrol and its impact on transportation, household spending and the prices of goods and services across the country.

The Federal Government removed the petrol subsidy on May 29, 2023, a decision that significantly altered fuel pricing in Nigeria and contributed to increased living and transportation costs.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has maintained that the government’s current petrol relief measures do not amount to a reinstatement of the former subsidy regime.

The Presidency has also explained that NNPC Retail’s decision to forgo its retail profit margin and sell petrol at cost for a temporary period is intended to cushion the impact of global oil price shocks on Nigerians.

The government said the arrangement is part of broader efforts to reduce the immediate effects of rising energy costs without reversing the market-based petroleum pricing framework.

The measures announced by the Federal Government also include plans to moderate fluctuations in petrol prices, expand compressed natural gas (CNG) adoption, increase support for vulnerable households and improve domestic energy supply arrangements.

However, the effectiveness of the interventions will depend on their implementation, the duration of the relief measures and the extent to which the benefits reach motorists and other consumers.

NNPC Ltd. has reiterated its commitment to maintaining reliable petroleum supply and operating responsibly while providing customers with information about its promotional initiatives.

The extension offers motorists additional time to take advantage of the discount, although customers are advised to confirm the applicable terms and availability at participating NNPC Retail stations before purchasing fuel.
