The Academic Staff Union of Universities at Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, has postponed its planned warning strike, giving the Jigawa State Government until the end of October to address outstanding demands.

The development means the industrial action earlier expected to begin on September 15 will no longer proceed immediately. The union, however, warned that failure by the state government to resolve the outstanding issues could trigger a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike from November 3, 2026.

ASUU-SLUK reached the decision after further engagement with the Jigawa State Government and deliberations by members over assurances received from the government.

According to reports citing a resolution jointly signed by ASUU-SLUK Chairman Idris Muhammad Chiromawa and Secretary Salisu Yunusa, the union agreed to give the government until October 31 to fulfil its commitments.

The union is demanding full implementation of the 2025 agreement between ASUU and the Federal Government, including payment of outstanding arrears accruing from January 2026.

Other issues in the dispute include the payroll arrangement at Sule Lamido University and funding concerns affecting the institution.

ASUU-SLUK said it took note of a government directive asking the payroll office and the university bursary to restructure the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Management System to better reflect the peculiarities of the institution.

The union also acknowledged assurances relating to funding and the two per cent local government contribution to Sule Lamido University. According to the resolution, the state government indicated that additional funding could be provided where necessary.

Despite giving the government more time, the lecturers maintained that their demands remained unresolved.

The union said that if the outstanding matters were not addressed by the end of October, members would begin an indefinite strike on November 3.

The latest decision represents a change from the position previously announced by the branch.

Verita Post had reported on September 15 that ASUU-SLUK was set to begin a two-week warning strike after an earlier ultimatum expired without a publicly announced agreement.

The union had initially threatened industrial action over implementation of the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement, salary-related arrears, promotion arrears, responsibility allowances, annual increments, third-party deductions and university funding concerns.

The postponement now gives the Jigawa State Government several more weeks to reach an agreement with the lecturers and avert another disruption to academic activities at Sule Lamido University.

The wider ASUU dispute over implementation of the 2025 agreement has also affected several public universities, with the national union recently warning federal and state governments over unresolved salaries, welfare issues and implementation of agreements reached with lecturers.
