Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has issued a stern warning to the state's youth, urging them not to become instruments of political violence. He stressed that no political ambition justifies the loss of a young person's life or blood.
Governor Nwifuru delivered this message on Wednesday in Abakaliki during the grand finale of the 2026 International Youth Week Celebration, an event organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ebonyi State Chapter. The governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Chidi Onyia, highlighted the youth as the state's most valuable asset.
He encouraged young people to prepare for future leadership and economic opportunities through a commitment to education, skills acquisition, discipline, innovation, entrepreneurship, and hard work. The governor specifically advised them to resist political manipulation, particularly through social media, propaganda, and inflammatory actions. Instead, he urged them to utilize digital platforms for constructive engagement, education, and community development.
Nwifuru also advised young individuals to move beyond reliance on political patronage by acquiring sustainable skills that will ensure their relevance in the economy, governance, and public service. He emphasized that thorough preparation is crucial for youths to seize opportunities as they arise, urging them to maintain focus, resilience, and dedication to personal development.
Earlier, the NYCN Ebonyi State Chairman, Douglas Ochishi, noted that the youth week celebration offered a platform for young people to reflect on their contributions to the state's development. Ochishi called on Ebonyi youths to reject drug abuse, cultism, cybercrime, and political thuggery, advocating instead for the embrace of education, innovation, entrepreneurship, peace, and responsible citizenship.
Other notable figures at the event, including the Commissioner for Works, Stanley Mbam, alongside other government officials and stakeholders, echoed calls for continuous investment in youth development, skills training, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership preparation.
