President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated candidates who emerged victorious in the legislative bye-elections conducted across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states on Saturday, September 19, 2026.

The five bye-elections, organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), comprised one federal constituency and four State House of Assembly constituencies. The All Progressives Congress (APC) won four seats, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) secured the remaining seat in Bauchi State.

The APC winners are Kallamu Usman MaiJama’a, who won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency seat; Husseini Datti, who emerged victorious in the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano; Okolosi Ator, winner of the Udu State Constituency seat in Delta; and Yakubu Ali, who won the Disina State Constituency election in Bauchi.

The APM’s Adamu Yakubu won the Sakwa State Constituency seat in Zaki Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Results across the four states

In Gombe, APC’s Kallamu Usman MaiJama’a won the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency election with 41,121 votes. The Labour Party polled 3,553 votes, while the APM recorded 872 votes.

In Kano, Husseini Datti of the APC won the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency seat with 22,890 votes. The Peoples Redemption Party scored 270 votes, while the Peoples Democratic Party recorded 108 votes.

In Delta, APC candidate Okolosi Ator secured the Udu State Constituency seat with 8,724 votes, while the PDP polled 214 votes.

Bauchi produced two separate outcomes. APC candidate Yakubu Ali won the Disina State Constituency election with 5,846 votes, ahead of the APM with 5,225 votes and the PRP with 3,701 votes.

At Sakwa, however, APM candidate Adamu Yakubu emerged victorious with 8,515 votes. The APC candidate scored 3,771 votes, while the PDP and PRP recorded 2,076 and 727 votes respectively.

President Tinubu congratulated the successful candidates and urged them to justify the confidence placed in them by their constituents through effective representation.

The President also encouraged candidates who lost the elections to accept the results in good faith and continue to contribute to Nigeria's democratic process.

Tinubu commended voters and security agencies for maintaining peace and order during the exercise. He also praised INEC for conducting the polls and urged the electoral commission to build on its experience from the bye-elections while addressing any identified shortcomings ahead of future elections.

The President further said the outcome demonstrated continued grassroots support for the APC and its administration's reform programme, according to a statement reported on Sunday.

INEC describes polls as lessons for 2027

The bye-elections also provided INEC with an opportunity to test its operational readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, described the exercises as important operational tests, saying they would provide lessons in logistics, technology deployment and administrative preparedness.

He said every off-cycle election should be treated as part of the commission's broader preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The five constituencies had become vacant for different reasons, including the death of lawmakers, resignation and defection. INEC had earlier fixed September 19 for the polls across the four states.

The results leave the APC with four of the five legislative seats contested, while the APM secured one seat in Bauchi.
