President Bola Tinubu has approved an 18-month extension of the tenures of the heads of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), allowing both officials to remain in office until 2028.

The affected officials are Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, and Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The approval was announced in a statement issued on Monday, October 19, 2026, by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Nwakuche's tenure will now expire on May 26, 2028, while Nandap will remain in office until June 30, 2028.

The Presidency explained that the decision followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, aimed at addressing succession gaps in both paramilitary agencies.

It added that the extension would provide sufficient time for the appropriate governing board to complete the process of appointing successors to the two service chiefs.

Tinubu commended Nwakuche and Nandap for reforms undertaken during their leadership and urged them to consolidate the progress recorded in their respective agencies.

Nwakuche was nominated by the President to lead the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024, with the Senate confirming his appointment in March 2025.

Similarly, Nandap was nominated as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on February 21, 2024, and subsequently confirmed by the Senate on March 1 of the same year.

The latest approval ensures that both officials will continue overseeing their respective agencies beyond their previously scheduled exit dates.

The Presidency, however, did not disclose further details about the succession arrangements or the timetable for selecting their eventual replacements.
