Four people have been killed and another injured in an early-morning crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Ipara Remo, Ogun State, the Federal Road Safety Corps said on Wednesday.

The accident occurred at about 4am near Straight Gate School and involved a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar and a HOWO truck.

According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, eight people were involved in the crash. Four male adults died, one person was injured and three others escaped unhurt.

FRSC spokesperson Afolabi Odunsi said preliminary findings indicated that speeding, wrongful overtaking and fatigue contributed to the collision.

The Mitsubishi driver was reportedly travelling at high speed when the vehicle struck the moving truck while attempting to overtake, the FRSC said.

The vehicles involved were identified as a blue Mitsubishi Cabstar with registration number FGE 753 XA and an ash-coloured HOWO truck with registration number T-695 KT.

The FRSC said its rescue team received information about the crash at 4:33am and arrived at the scene six minutes later.

The injured victim was taken to Victory Hospital, Ogere, for treatment, while the bodies of those who died were deposited at FOS Mortuary, Ipara.

The two vehicles were subsequently handed over to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Isara Division, for further investigation.

Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi urged motorists to avoid speeding, driving while fatigued and unsafe overtaking, particularly during early-morning journeys.

He also advised drivers travelling long distances to get adequate rest and overtake only when it is safe to do so.

Wednesday’s crash occurred on a different section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway from the Kara Bridge corridor, where motorists have faced severe congestion during ongoing bridge repairs and after a separate multi-vehicle accident this week.

The Ipara Remo incident happened around Straight Gate School, further along the Ogun State section of the expressway.
