Taiwo Awoniyi has been recalled to Nigeria's Super Eagles squad to replace injured striker Victor Osimhen ahead of the country's opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the change on Sunday, September 20, 2026, following Osimhen's withdrawal from the squad.

Awoniyi's return comes as Nigeria prepares to face Madagascar on Friday, September 25, before meeting Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, September 29.

Osimhen had initially been included in coach Eric Chelle's squad despite sustaining a muscle injury while playing for Galatasaray.

The striker was expected to continue his recovery ahead of the international fixtures, but the Nigeria Football Federation subsequently confirmed that he would be unavailable for both qualifying matches.

According to the Confederation of African Football, Osimhen sustained the injury during a Turkish league match against Başakşehir.

Medical examinations subsequently identified a muscle problem affecting his right thigh.

Although Nigeria's coaching staff had initially hoped he would recover in time for the September international window, his withdrawal became necessary after his recovery period extended beyond the expected timeframe.

The decision opened the door for Awoniyi, who has returned to the national team after a lengthy absence.

The 29-year-old striker, currently playing for Coventry City, last featured for Nigeria during the 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign against Libya in October 2024.

His recall gives Chelle another recognised centre-forward option as the Super Eagles prepare to begin their latest continental qualifying campaign.

Nigeria's opening fixture against Madagascar is scheduled to take place in Uyo on September 25.

The Super Eagles will then travel to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.

Awoniyi's inclusion changes the available attacking options for the two fixtures, although his specific role in the starting lineup will depend on the coach's selection.

The squad announcement confirms Osimhen's absence from the two September qualifiers, but it does not establish a definite date for his return to competitive action.

Nigeria is also scheduled to face Russia in an international friendly on October 6.
